Claude Cowork Explained: Delegating Real Work to AI (2026)

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic workspace for non-coders. Claude Cowork takes a whole multi-step task, plans it, runs it across your files, connectors and browser, and hands back a finished document, spreadsheet or deck.

It uses the same architecture that powers Claude Code, minus the terminal. You describe an outcome, walk away, and come back to work that is done rather than drafted.

What is Claude Cowork and how does it differ from Claude chat and Claude Code?

Claude chat is a conversation. You ask, Claude answers, you copy the answer somewhere useful. The work of assembling the final output stays with you.

Claude Code is an agent for developers. It lives in a terminal, works in a code repository, and assumes you are comfortable with git and the command line.

Claude Cowork is the same agentic engine pointed at ordinary office work. It reads and writes your local files, coordinates sub-agents across parallel workstreams, runs shell commands in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, and produces real deliverables — Excel files with working formulas, PowerPoint decks, formatted reports.

Cowork reached feature parity on Windows on 10 February 2026, and web and mobile access moved into beta from July 2026. Sessions now live with your Claude account rather than one machine, so you can start a task at your desk and steer it from your phone.

Why does Claude Cowork matter for Australian SMEs right now?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Characteristics Survey, released 25 June 2026, found that only 12 per cent of Australian businesses used AI in 2024–25 — but that is up from 1 per cent in 2021–22. Among small and micro businesses, uptake sat at around 11 per cent, against 35 per cent for large businesses.

The gap is not about capability. ABS found that innovation-active small businesses adopted AI at 19 per cent, nearly five times the 4 per cent rate of small businesses doing no innovation activity at all.

The National AI Centre's SME AI Pulse tells the same story from another angle. Across the December 2025 to February 2026 quarter, 43 per cent of Australian SMEs reported some level of AI adoption, and 19 per cent said outright that they do not know how to use AI in their business.

That 19 per cent is the whole problem in one number. These owners are not opposed to AI. They have a ChatGPT or Claude tab open, they get useful answers, and nothing changes about how much work lands on their desk on Monday.

Cowork closes that gap because the unit of work changes. You stop asking for paragraphs and start handing over jobs.

What work should you delegate to Claude Cowork first?

The filter is simple. Delegate anything that is repetitive, file-heavy, low-judgement and currently eating a named person's afternoon.

Step 1 — Audit one week of admin. Have every team member log tasks in 30-minute blocks for five days. You are hunting for the tasks that recur weekly or monthly and involve moving data between files.
Step 2 — Score each task on judgement. If a competent new hire could do it correctly from a written instruction, it is a Cowork candidate. If it needs relationship context or commercial risk assessment, it is not.
Step 3 — Connect one folder, not your whole drive. On desktop, grant access to a single working folder. Claude can only read and write where you have granted access, and it requires explicit approval before permanently deleting anything.
Step 4 — Write folder instructions before your first task. Folder instructions give Cowork standing context — your entity names, your reporting format, your file naming convention. This is the same discipline behind using Claude Projects to systemise your brand voice, applied to operations instead of copy.
Step 5 — Run in Manual mode for the first fortnight. Claude pauses and asks before each action. It is slower, and it is how you learn what the agent actually does before you loosen the reins to Auto mode.
Step 6 — Schedule the winners. Once a task runs clean three times, type /schedule in the session. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud without your computer awake.
Step 7 — Measure in hours, then in dollars. Log the before-and-after time for each delegated task. Anything under a 60 per cent time reduction after three runs needs a better brief, not a better model.

Strong first candidates: monthly expense reconciliation from a folder of receipt photos, turning a stack of meeting transcripts into an action register, building a formatted board pack from raw exports, cleaning and cross-tabulating a messy CRM extract, and batch-renaming a decade of tender documents into a consistent date format.

Weak candidates: anything where being 90 per cent right is worse than not doing it at all. Client pricing, employment decisions, statutory lodgements and anything you would not hand a new graduate on day three.

What does Claude Cowork look like in a real Australian business?

Here is a typical composite example — a representative Brisbane SME profile rather than a named client.

An 11-person commercial fit-out contractor in Milton runs monthly reporting through one office manager. Three recurring jobs consume her time: reconciling roughly 140 supplier receipts, assembling a project status pack from six site supervisors' notes, and producing a variations summary spreadsheet for the director.

Combined, those three jobs take about 9 hours a month. At a loaded cost of $48 per hour, that is $432 a month, or $5,184 a year spent assembling documents nobody enjoys producing.

Delegated to Cowork with folder instructions and a scheduled monthly run, the same three jobs take about 2.5 hours — the office manager now briefs, reviews and corrects rather than builds. That is 6.5 hours returned each month, or 78 hours a year, worth roughly $3,744.

The Max 5x plan at US$100 per month costs roughly A$1,900 a year. The reporting work alone covers it twice over, before you count the two extra tenders she now has time to price.

That is the honest arithmetic. Not transformation — a redeployed afternoon, repeated monthly, that compounds.

What are the most common Claude Cowork mistakes?

Using Cowork for tasks chat handles fine. Cowork consumes far more of your usage allocation than a standard conversation. Reserve it for multi-step, file-based work and you will hit limits far less often.
Jumping straight to Skip mode. Skip all approvals means nothing checks Claude's actions automatically. Manual and Auto exist for a reason, and Auto still safety-reviews every action before it runs.
Granting access to an entire drive. Connect the narrowest folder that contains the job. Broad access is how sensitive client data ends up somewhere you did not intend.
Expecting chat memory to carry across. What Claude remembers about you in chat does not yet transfer into Cowork sessions. Inside Cowork, persistent memory currently lives in projects only.

If your work is not code, Cowork is the surface you want.

Can Claude Cowork access my files without permission?

No. Claude can only read and write files in folders you explicitly connect through the Claude desktop app, and network access follows the egress settings you have configured. Claude also requires your explicit approval before permanently deleting any file. Sessions run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, separate from your computer and network.
