How Much Does Claude Cost for a Small Business? (2026 Plans Compared)
Last updated: September 2026.
Claude pricing for a small business starts at US$0 for the Free plan, US$17 per month for Pro on an annual subscription (US$20 billed monthly), US$100 per month for Max, and US$20 per seat per month for Team on annual billing. Most Australian small businesses land on Pro or a small Team plan — roughly A$24 to A$28 per person per month.
That is the short answer. The longer answer is that the plan you pick matters far less than whether you use it. I have watched businesses pay for Max seats and get less out of Claude than a sole trader on the Free plan, simply because nobody sat down and decided what work the tool was meant to take off their desk. This guide breaks down every plan, converts the real cost into Australian dollars, and tells you which one actually fits your situation.

How much does Claude cost in Australia?
Anthropic publishes Claude pricing in US dollars only. There is no separate Australian price list. Your card is charged in USD, your bank applies its own conversion, and tax is calculated from the billing address on your payment method — Anthropic's pricing page states plainly that listed prices exclude applicable tax, and there is a Tax or VAT ID field where Australian businesses can enter their ABN.
Here is what each plan costs, taken directly from Anthropic's pricing page in September 2026. The AUD column is a conversion at the AUD/USD rate of 0.7140 recorded on 14 September 2026 by Trading Economics, which puts one US dollar at roughly A$1.40. Treat those figures as indicative — the rate moves, and GST is not included.
| Plan | USD price | Approx. AUD | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | A$0 | Testing whether Claude suits how you work |
| Pro | US$17/mo annual (US$200 up front), or US$20 monthly | ~A$24–A$28/mo | Sole traders and one or two heavy users |
| Max | From US$100/mo (5x or 20x Pro usage) | ~A$140–A$280/mo | Founders and builders in Claude all day |
| Team (2–150 people) | Standard seat US$20/seat/mo annual (US$25 monthly); Premium seat US$100 annual (US$125 monthly) | ~A$28–A$35 per standard seat | Small teams needing shared projects and SSO |
| Enterprise | US$20/seat/mo plus usage at API rates, billed annually | Varies with usage | Larger firms needing SCIM, audit logs, retention controls |
Two details catch Australian buyers out. Team plans require a minimum of two people and cap at 150. And Claude Code — the terminal tool developers and technical operators use — is included in every paid plan, drawing from the same usage pool as your chats rather than costing extra.
Why does choosing the right Claude plan matter?
Because the subscription is almost never the expensive part. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Characteristics of Australian Business survey for 2024–25, released on 25 June 2026, 12% of Australian businesses used AI in 2024–25 — up from 1% in 2021–22. Break that down by size and the gap is stark: around 11% of small and micro businesses, 22% of medium businesses, and 35% of large businesses.
Read that as a competitive picture rather than a technology statistic. Large firms are adopting at roughly three times the rate of small ones, and they are doing it with budget and implementation staff. A small business competing against them does not win by buying the most expensive seat. It wins by picking a A$28 plan, choosing three tasks to systemise, and actually finishing the job.
The real cost of Claude is the hours someone spends learning it and the work that does or does not move as a result. A Pro seat that saves a bookkeeper four hours a month has paid for itself many times over at Australian charge-out rates. A Max seat nobody opens costs A$1,680 a year and returns nothing.
Which Claude plan should your business choose?
Work through these in order. Do not skip to the plan that sounds most serious.
1. Start on Free for two weeks. The Free plan includes web, desktop and mobile chat, web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, Skills and connectors. That is enough to answer the only question that matters at this stage: does anyone here actually use it? Set a calendar reminder for day fourteen.
2. Move your heaviest user to Pro. The moment one person is hitting usage limits, that person needs Pro at US$17 per month on annual billing or US$20 monthly. Pro adds Projects for organising work, Research, access to more Claude models, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Design and Claude for Microsoft 365. For most Australian small businesses, this is where you stay.
3. Consider Max only when limits bite daily. Max starts at US$100 per month and gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session, plus higher output limits and priority access at busy times. The test is simple: are you hitting the ceiling on Pro several times a week? If not, you are buying headroom you will not use.
4. Switch to Team when two or more people need to share work. Team at US$20 per standard seat per month on annual billing adds shared projects and collaboration, central billing, single sign-on, admin controls for connectors, enterprise search across your organisation, and — importantly for client-facing firms — no model training on your content by default. You can mix standard and premium seats, so your one power user gets a Premium seat while everyone else sits on Standard.
5. Only look at Enterprise if compliance demands it. Enterprise is US$20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates, annually. You are paying for SCIM provisioning, audit logs, role-based access, custom data retention, IP allowlisting and spend controls. If your professional indemnity insurer or a government client is asking for those controls in writing, this is the tier. Otherwise it is overhead.
6. Use the API only for products, not for chatting. If you are building something customers touch, you pay per token instead. Current published rates are US$5 input and US$25 output per million tokens for Opus 5, US$2 and US$10 for Sonnet 5, and US$1 and US$5 for Haiku 4.5. Batch processing halves those rates. Web search inside the API costs US$10 per 1,000 searches, and code execution gives 50 free hours daily per organisation before charging US$0.05 per hour per container. This is a different budget line with different risks — model your usage before you commit.

What does Claude cost a real Australian business?
Take a six-person Brisbane trades and services business — an office manager, two estimators, a marketing coordinator and two directors. Only four of them touch a computer for most of the day.
The sensible build is a Team plan with four standard seats at US$20 per seat per month on annual billing: US$80 per month, about A$112, or roughly A$1,344 a year before GST and card conversion fees. If one director is deep in Claude Code building internal tools, upgrade that single person to a Premium seat at US$100 per month instead of putting the whole team on a higher tier.
Compare that against what it replaces. One part-time administrative hire in Australia costs multiples of that figure every month. The Team plan is not competing with a person — it is competing with the hours those four people currently lose to drafting quotes, rewriting the same client emails and summarising site notes. If it returns two hours a week each, the arithmetic is not close.
Where this goes wrong is when a business buys six seats because it has six staff. Two of those seats will sit idle. Buy for the people who will use it, then add seats midterm — Team plans allow that.
What mistakes do businesses make with Claude pricing?
Buying Max before exhausting Pro. Max costs five times Pro and exists for people who work inside Claude continuously. If you have never hit a usage limit, you do not need it. Upgrade on evidence, not ambition.
Paying monthly out of habit. Pro is US$17 per month on annual billing versus US$20 monthly, and Team standard seats are US$20 versus US$25. On a four-seat Team plan that difference is US$240 a year for nothing. If you are past the trial stage, commit annually.
Forgetting the exchange rate and the tax. Every plan is billed in USD. Your bank's conversion margin and any international transaction fee sit on top of the published price, and the pricing page notes that listed prices exclude applicable tax. Budget above the headline number, and add your ABN to the billing account so your invoices are correct.
Buying seats without deciding what they replace. This is the expensive one. A seat with no assigned job is a subscription, not a system. Before you buy, name three recurring tasks it will take over and who owns making that happen. If you cannot name them, you are not ready to pay.
Treating the API as a cheaper subscription. Per-token pricing looks inexpensive until an untested workflow loops. The API is for products you are building, not a workaround for a seat licence.
Frequently asked questions about Claude pricing
Is Claude free for small businesses?
Yes. Anthropic offers a Free plan at US$0 that includes chat across web, desktop and mobile, web search, memory across conversations, file creation and code execution, Skills and connectors. It has lower usage limits than paid plans and does not include Projects, Research or Claude Code. It is genuinely useful for testing whether Claude fits your workflow before you spend anything.
How much is Claude Pro in Australian dollars?
Claude Pro is priced in US dollars at US$17 per month on an annual subscription billed as US$200 up front, or US$20 if billed monthly. At the AUD/USD rate of 0.7140 recorded on 14 September 2026, that is roughly A$24 to A$28 per month before GST and before any foreign transaction fee your bank charges. There is no separate Australian price list.
Is Claude Code included in the subscription?
Yes. Anthropic includes Claude Code in all paid plans — Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It shares the same usage pool as your chats rather than being billed separately, so terminal work and conversations draw from one allowance. Heavy coding sessions can alternatively run on pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account.
What is the difference between Claude Team and Enterprise?
Team costs US$20 per standard seat per month on annual billing and covers 2 to 150 people, adding shared projects, central billing, single sign-on and enterprise search. Enterprise is US$20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, billed annually, and adds SCIM provisioning, audit logs, role-based access, a compliance API, custom data retention and IP allowlisting. Choose Enterprise when governance requirements demand those controls.
Should I pay for Claude monthly or annually?
Annual billing is cheaper on both individual and team plans — Pro drops from US$20 to US$17 per month, and Team standard seats drop from US$25 to US$20. Pay monthly while you are still testing whether the tool sticks. Once you have evidence that people use it daily, switch to annual and capture the discount.
