How to Connect Claude to Gmail, Slack and Google Drive (2026 MCP Connectors Guide)

You connect Claude to Gmail, Slack and Google Drive using Claude connectors: open Claude, click the plus icon in the chat box, choose the connector, sign in with OAuth, approve the permission scopes, then test with one read-only prompt.
That is the whole mechanism. No API keys, no developer account, no code. What most Australian businesses get wrong is not the setup — about four minutes per connector — it is deciding which mailbox, which Drive folder and which Slack workspace Claude should see, and who reviews what it does. This guide covers the clicks, the plan requirements, the permission scopes and the mistakes that cost people rework.

What are Claude connectors (and what is MCP)?
Claude connectors are authorised links between Claude and an external tool — Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Slack, your CRM — that let Claude read from and, where you permit it, write to that tool inside a normal chat. Instead of you copying an email thread into Claude, Claude fetches the thread itself.
Underneath, connectors run on MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard Anthropic released in November 2024 for connecting AI models to tools and data. You do not need to understand the protocol to use it — but it is worth knowing the term, because when a vendor says "we have an MCP server", that means you can point Claude at them.
There are three flavours. Built-in connectors (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Slack) are maintained by Anthropic and toggle on from the chat box. Directory connectors are third-party MCP servers listed in the Anthropic Connectors Directory, some verified, some community-built. Custom connectors are remote MCP servers you add by pasting a URL under Settings, then Connectors — available on all plans, with Free limited to one.

Why does connector setup matter for Australian businesses?
The Australian Government's AI Adoption Tracker found 41% of small and medium enterprises are adopting AI, while 21% still do not know how to use it. Other 2026 surveys put SMB usage between 42% (NAB) and 69% (QuickBooks), depending on whether you count occasional or regular use. But Deloitte Access Economics found only 5% of adopting businesses are "fully enabled" to realise the benefits.
That gap between "we use AI" and "AI is doing real work" is almost entirely a connection problem. A business paying $30 a month for Claude and pasting text into it by hand is buying a very expensive notepad. The same subscription with Gmail, Drive and Slack connected stops being a chat window and starts being something that reads the quote you sent in March, checks the Drive folder for the signed variation, and drafts the follow-up.
Copy-paste also caps the context. A connected Claude can search 400 emails in one prompt. A human pasting emails will do three, get bored, and go back to doing it manually.
How do you do a Claude connectors setup for Gmail, Slack and Google Drive?
Do these one at a time, in this order. Connect, test, then move to the next. The whole sequence takes under 20 minutes.
Step 1: Check your plan and admin permissions
Google Workspace connectors (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) are available to all Claude users, including Free. The Slack connector requires Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. On Team or Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector at organisation level before anyone can authenticate — and for Slack, a Slack workspace admin must approve the Claude app in the Slack Marketplace first. Sort this before you gather your team, or you will spend the session waiting on an admin.
Step 2: Connect Gmail
Open a new chat. Click the plus icon in the message box, choose Gmail, and click Connect. Google's OAuth screen opens. Sign in with the account you actually want Claude reading — not your personal Gmail if the work lives in a Workspace account. Read the scope list before you approve it. Then close the loop with a read-only test prompt: "Search my inbox for enquiries from the last 14 days that I haven't replied to, and list them with sender, date and one-line summary."
As of 19 August 2026, Anthropic expanded Gmail write actions to include send, reply and forward, with approval on by default. Leave that approval prompt on. Claude drafts, you press send.
Step 3: Connect Google Drive
Same plus icon, choose Google Drive, authorise. Claude can then search your Drive, open Docs, Sheets and Slides, and reference them in a conversation. Drive write actions now cover share, move and trash — again gated behind approval.
Two things make Drive far more useful. Tidy your folder names before you connect — Claude searches on file and folder names, so "2026 Client Proposals" beats "Stuff". And be specific about where to look: "in the Onboarding folder", not "in my Drive".
Step 4: Connect Slack
Slack needs the workspace approval mentioned in Step 1. Once done, toggle Slack on from the plus icon and log in with your Claude credentials. Claude can then search channels and threads you already have access to — it gains no visibility into private channels you are not a member of.
Test with something that would genuinely take you time: "Summarise the last five days in #ops-brisbane and list every decision made and who owns it."

What does this look like in a real Australian business?
Take a representative client scenario: a six-person Brisbane commercial cleaning contractor. Enquiries land in a shared Gmail inbox, quotes and site photos live in Google Drive, and the ops team coordinates in Slack. Before connectors, the operations manager spent roughly 55 minutes each morning triaging overnight enquiries, hunting for the last quote sent to a repeat client, and writing a Slack brief for the crew leads.
After connecting Gmail, Drive and Slack, the same job runs on one prompt: pull every unanswered enquiry from the last 24 hours, match each to prior quotes in the Proposals folder, draft replies, and post a shift brief to #ops. The manager reviews and sends. Morning triage dropped to about 12 minutes — roughly 3.5 hours back per week, or 170 hours a year.

What are the most common Claude connectors setup mistakes?
- Approving permission scopes without reading them. OAuth screens are skimmed, not read. Check whether you are granting read-only or read-and-write, and connect the account with the narrowest access that still does the job — not the director's account with visibility over everything.
- Ignoring data handling under the Australian Privacy Act. If you handle personal information, connecting an inbox full of it to any AI tool is a decision your privacy policy needs to reflect. Under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles you remain accountable for how that information is used and disclosed. Check your APP 1 policy and consent wording before connecting a client-facing mailbox.
- Connecting everything at once. Six connectors switched on in one afternoon means that when output looks wrong, you cannot tell which source caused it. Connect one, use it for a week, then add the next.
- No review step. Write actions are approval-gated by default for a reason. Leave approvals on, and name a person who checks outbound drafts. "Claude sent it" is not a defence to a client.
- Expecting a connector to fix a messy system. Claude searching a Drive of 4,000 untitled files returns 4,000 untitled files. Tidy the folder structure first; the connector amplifies whatever order already exists.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid Claude plan to connect Gmail and Google Drive?
No. Google Workspace connectors — Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive — are available to all Claude users including the Free plan, on claude.ai and Claude Desktop. Free users are limited to one custom MCP connector, but the built-in Google connectors are not restricted by tier. The Slack connector does require Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
Can Claude send emails from my Gmail account?
Yes. Since 19 August 2026, Gmail write actions in Claude include send, reply and forward, and Drive write actions include share, move and trash. Approval is on by default, so Claude prepares the action and you confirm it before anything leaves your account. We recommend leaving that approval requirement switched on permanently.
Why can't I see the Slack connector in my Claude account?
Two likely causes. You may be on the Free plan, where the Slack connector is not available — it requires Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Or your Slack workspace administrator has not yet approved the Claude app in the Slack Marketplace. On Team and Enterprise plans, a Claude Owner or Primary Owner must also enable the connector at organisation level first.
Is it safe to connect Claude to business data under Australian privacy law?
It can be, with proper scoping. Claude only accesses the account you have authorised, only retrieves data when you explicitly ask, and pulls the minimum information needed. Your obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles still apply, so review your privacy policy, restrict connected accounts to what the task requires, and document who approves write actions.
What's the difference between a connector, an MCP server and a Claude Skill?
A connector is the authorised link between Claude and an external tool. An MCP server is the technical service on the other end of that link — connectors in the Anthropic Connectors Directory are MCP servers Anthropic has listed, and custom connectors are MCP servers you add by URL.
